Wall thickness is the local material thickness of a restoration. Every milling material defines a minimum wall thickness below which the part fails during milling, sintering or clinical use. Permissible values depend on material and manufacturer and differ between zirconia, lithium disilicate, PMMA and metal alloys. Critical zones are occlusal fissures, the transition to the margin line and connectors.
Is there a universal minimum value?
No. The material manufacturer’s specifications for the specific indication are binding, which is why a reliable check runs against the material profile of the actual blank.
